Yankees listed as logical fit for two-time All-Star third baseman

With the trade deadline quickly approaching, the New York Yankees still have a glaring weakness at the hot corner.

The Yankees have not received much production from their third baseman since Oswaldo Cabrera went down with an injury. With New York moving Jazz Chisholm Jr. back to second base and the team releasing DJ LeMahieu, there is still a hole at third base that the Yankees need to fill.

Considering that the Yankees still owe LeMahieu $22 million, The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal believes that trading for the Arizona Diamondbacks' third baseman Eugenio Suárez makes sense for the Yankees.

"The $22 million the Yankees are obligated to pay DJ LeMahieu makes a rental such as Arizona’s Eugenio Suárez a more logical fit for them at third base than a player such as St. Louis’ Nolan Arenado or Colorado’s Ryan McMahon, who is signed beyond 2025," Rosenthal wrote.

"Suárez would be owed about $5 million at the deadline. Arenado would be owed more than $10 million this season plus $27 million next season, McMahon about $4 million this season and $16 million in both 2026 and ’27."

The Diamondbacks will likely deal with Suárez before the trade deadline, as his contract is expiring. The Yankees would not owe him much money if they traded for the 33-year-old All-Star, and would get a high-caliber rental for the rest of the season that could help them make a deep playoff run.

Suárez is slashing .249/.317/.873 with 29 home runs and 75 RBIs. Though the two-time All-Star would be helpful for the rest of the season, New York still has Cabrera under team control for the next three seasons, so they are still set at the hot corner for the future.
