The New York Yankees have had a suspiciously quiet offseason so far.

They've made small moves, like re-signing left-hander Ryan Yarbrough and extending a qualifying offer to center fielder Trent Grisham, which he accepted.

Cody Bellinger and Kyle Tucker are two top free agents who could land in New York, but the Yankees would be wise to have a backup plan in the outfield.

According to Ari Alexander of 7News Boston, the Yankees have discussed a trade with the Colorado Rockies for outfielder Brenton Doyle. Doyle, 27, won back-to-back Gold Glove Awards from 2023-24 for his stellar defense in center field with the Rockies.

In 2025, he had six outs above average after recording 14 OAA in both 2023 and 2024, winning a Fielding Bible Award in 2024.

Can Doyle contribute on offense?

Bellinger's potential absence from the Yankees' lineup could hurt them in more ways than one. He was spectacular against left-handed pitchers, something switch-hitting youngster Jasson Dominguez was not.

Doyle and Dominguez could split duties in left field, but Doyle's natural position is center field, a position presumably secured for Grisham.

Doyle followed a 4.0 bWAR in 2024 with a 0.4 mark this past season, managing a below-par.233/.274/.376 slash line with a 72 OPS+. Those are okay numbers for a bench option, but not for a starting left fielder on a club with championship aspirations.
