The New York Yankees experienced a weird season in 2025. Now with some time to reflect, owner Hal Steinbrenner shared his thoughts on last year’s campaign.
Despite losing Juan Soto to the New York Mets in the offseason, the Yankees were able to conjure up a very impressive roster that won 94 games, and boasted the best offense in baseball. Aaron Judge won his third MVP award, and the Yankees were able to make the most out of their starting rotation despite losing Gerrit Cole for the entire season.
However, through all the positives, the Yankees ultimately floundered in the postseason, losing to the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALDS in just five games. After a year of ups and downs, Steinbrenner commented on what he liked — and disliked — the most from this past season.
“How well they played together, how incredible the clubhouse was,” Steinbrenner said. “What was disappointing was the result. I didn't like that 6-7 week period that we had where we were making mistakes.”
Steinbrenner is likely referring to the period of time in the middle of the summer in which the Yankees surrendered the lead in the AL East — and wouldn’t get it back — and momentarily slipped out of the playoff picture before getting back on track in September.
Heading into 2026, the Yankees will look to correct those mistakes as they aim to get back to the World Series. 2009 was the last time the Yankees were on top of the mountain, so they’ll look to snatch title number 28 in 2026.
