The New York Yankees have had a very quiet offseason so far. They've not spent a lot of money, and the money they have spent has mostly been on Trent Grisham returning on a $22.25 million qualifying offer.

Outside additions for the Yankees have been few and far between, with all of them not being the high-level moves that their AL East counterparts have made.

But the Edward Cabrera trade rumors were finally a good sign. It seemed like the Yankees were making headway on a deal. But, amid the Chicago Cubs reportedly finalizing a deal for Cabrera, Jon Heyman of The New York Post shared a harsh reality for Yankees fans.

Yankees fans dealt harsh reality amid Edward Cabrera trade rumors

"Cubs are working on a deal for Edward Cabrera, @Michael_Cerami reported it is getting close with the Cubs," Heyman reports. "Word is Yankees were 'never close'."

This update from Heyman, that the Yankees were "never close" to trading for Cabrera despite reports earlier in the week to the contrary, is a bitter truth for fans.

In what seemed like, for the first time, the Yankees were making progress towards a significant move. Instead, the Miami Marlins are closing in on a deal to send him to the Cubs, and the Yankees weren't close to making a deal.

The Yankees need more rotation help amid some injury uncertainty with Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon. While the Cubs and other teams might need starting pitching more than the Yankees, they still could use another frontline starter.

And yet, the Yankees aren't set to land Cabrera, and instead will be seeing him join the Cubs as long as the Cubs-Marlins trade doesn't fall through.

This report from Heyman, that the Yankees weren't close to a trade, is a harsh reality for fans. It's been a slow offseason, and even more so for the Yankees, who've not made a big outside addition.

A frustrating winter is getting even more disappointing for Yankees fans. There was no guarantee they were going to land Cabrera, but hearing the Yankees "weren't close" to landing him is a harsh dose of reality for fans of a supposed big spender in the Yankees.
