Devin Williams' contract with the New York Mets and Luke Weaver's likely departure mean the New York Yankees need to add to their bullpen.

Tim Hill, Brent Headrick, and Jayvien Sandridge are the Yankees' three left-handed relievers on their active roster, but they could use a late-inning arm to set up for closer David Bednar.

Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the Yankees are one of the clubs interested in making a trade for St. Louis Cardinals lefty JoJo Romero.

The 2026 season will be Romero's final season of arbitration before free agency. He posted a 2.07 ERA with 55 strikeouts in 61 innings last year. He began his career with the Philadelphia Phillies but was dealt to the Cardinals in 2022.

Lefty options

The Cardinals may decide to hold on to Romero in hopes of him boosting his stock as next year's trade deadline approaches.

The previously non-tendered Mark Leiter Jr. Had reverse splits with the Yankees, holding left-handed hitters to a.691 OPS compared to a.894 OPS against righties.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone routinely turned to the sidewinder Hill in left-handed heavy lanes, and Romero could be another trusted lefty in his bullpen.

Other left-handed free agent relievers the Yankees could consider are Genesis Cabrera, Taylor Rogers, Drew Pomeranz, and Danny Coulombe.
