The New York Yankees have built a comfortable lead in the American League East division as their pitching starts to match their red-hot offense.

Perhaps most impressive throughout this run has been the team’s ability to overcome significant injuries. Franchise ace Gerrit Cole has been ruled out for the season, while Luis Gil and Giancarlo Stanton have yet to make their debuts.

But as one of their key players looks to return from the injured list, it’s up in the air how the infield might have to adjust.

“Jazz Chisholm Jr. (right oblique strain) appears to be nearing a return from the injured list,” Brendan Kuty wrote for The Athletic. “DJ LeMahieu has looked rejuvenated. But the Yankees can’t play both of them at second base at the same time.”

Shortly after Chisholm went down with his injury, LeMahieu returned to the team from his own. But they both seem to prefer second base while there’s a clear need at third. Kuty asked LeMahieu if he’d be willing to slide to the hot corner to accommodate Chisholm’s return to second and noted that he didn’t sound “thrilled about it.”

“I feel really comfortable right now (at second base),” LeMahieu responded. “I”m sure we’ll deal with it when we get there.”

Chisholm joined the Yankees via trade last year and filled in at third place for their run to the World Series, suggesting he could be the choice there when he comes back. Manager Aaron Boone seems to be waiting until the last minute to determine where the two might slot in upon Chilsholm’s looming return.
