The New York Yankees traded for Devin Williams this offseason, but he has struggled immensely so far. He will be a free agent after the season ends, and if he cannot help the Yankees win, they could trade him.
Williams has a 10.03 ERA and has been stripped of closer duties this season. The Yankees are hoping he can figure things out, but hope is not a strategy for a team that has World Series aspirations. FanSided's Miranda Remaklus suggested the Yankees could trade Williams if he continues to struggle.
"Williams is set to become a free agent next winter, meaning that New York risks losing him for nothing if they don't think he can figure into their postseason plans," wrote Remaklus. "Luckily, relief pitchers are in high demand at the trade deadline. Some teams may wait to see about the availability of St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley, while others may seek a project with Williams."
The Yankees will need Williams to show some signs of life for him to have any sort of trade value at the deadline. He is on an expiring contract, but there is no doubt about the player he can be. He is a two-time All-Star and two-time Trevor Hoffman National League reliever of the year.
Even if Williams starts playing well, the Yankees could look to trade him if he has not found his All-Star form. At worst, Williams can be a great leverage arm for any team. He thrived as a setup man for Josh Hader for many years with the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Yankees traded for Williams, thinking they were getting the best closer in baseball. If he is anything less than that, the Yankees would be better off trading him for potential offensive upgrades before he hits the open market next winter.
