Yankees' Bo Bichette rumor feeds into Jazz Chisholm trade talks image

The New York Yankees are apparently interested in Bo Bichette.

On so many levels, it'd be fascinating if the Yanks ended up with the free agent from the Toronto Blue Jays. And one of those levels includes trading Jazz Chisholm.

MLB.com's Thomas Harrigan looked at the possibilities in a new article linking the Yankees and Bichette on Wednesday. And he acknowledged that a Bichette signing could add fuel to Chisholm trade rumors.

"There isn’t an obvious fit for Bichette in New York’s infield beyond a short-term opening at shortstop, with Anthony Volpe slated to miss Opening Day after undergoing left shoulder surgery," Harrigan writes. "That said, second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. Has been floated as a trade candidate as he enters his walk year."

Bichette is expected to move off of shortstop eventually, and potentially sooner rather than later. He's simply not a good defender there.

The Yankees acquired Ryan McMahon in the middle of last season to play third base, and he's  a great defensive player, so it seems he'd be safe over there.

Chisholm at second base? Maybe there's a move to be made.

"Adding Bichette to the mix would raise more questions about Chisholm’s future with the organization and put pressure on the club to trade the pending free agent before Spring Training, aiming to avoid the type of camp distractions the Red Sox experienced with Rafael Devers after signing Alex Bregman last February," Harrigan writes.

The trade rumors are still a bit bizarre, though. Chisholm has been electric since the Yankees acquired him from the Marlins in 2024.

What incentive do they really have to pay Bichette lots of money and then trade Jazz away? If things keep moving in this direction, we may get to find out.
