The New York Yankees could be in the market for a starting pitcher after the injury to Clarke Schmidt. They could try to land an arm with some club control.
Gerrit Cole will not pitch this season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, and Luis Gil is still working his way back from injury. Max Fried and Carlos Rodón have held things down, but the Yankees lack depth behind them. Gil's return will help, but can the Yankees rely on Cam Schlittler, Marcus Stroman and Will Warren in the postseason?
The Yankees also have Ryan Yarbrough, who has been pitching well since joining the rotation. Before landing on the injured list, he had a 3.83 ERA in his eight starts. He allowed two or fewer earned runs in seven of those starts, but his ERA was inflated after one bad, eight-run outing. Even if he continues to pitch well after returning from his injury, the Yankees could use one more starter.
There could be a few valuable starting pitchers available for the team to trade for. However, FanSided's Stephen Parello tabbed Edward Cabrera as the best option for the Yankees.
"By raw stats, Miami's Edward Cabrera might be the closest facsimile to Clarke Schmidt available on the trade market," wrote Parello. "Schmidt's season is done with 14 starts, 78.2 innings, a 3.33 ERA, and a 3.90 FIP on his ledger. Cabrera has made 15 starts, logged 78.1 innings, and posted an ERA of 3.33 with a 3.88 FIP."

Cabrera has dealt with injuries in his career. He has made 16 starts this season. His career high for starts in a season is 20. He will not be a cheap addition, as he is under club control through 2028.
