The New York Yankees have seen two of their free agent relievers sign contracts with the New York Mets, as Devin Williams and, most recently, Luke Weaver joined the Mets bullpen.
Losing both of these relievers isn't a strange result for the Yankees this offseason, but the same cannot be said for the most recent update on the Yankees' interest in Weaver.
According to Joel Sherman of The New York Post, the Yankees didn't make any bids to try to retain Weaver this winter.
Weaver had an active market, but the Yankees were not one of those teams.
Yankees strangely not involved in Luke Weaver's FA market
"The Yankees were not part of the bidding to try to retain Weaver, according to a source," Sherman reported.
This update from Sherman is an odd one for the Yankees. Even if Weaver wasn't first on the Yankees' list of priorities, he was a quality bullpen arm for them in 2025.
Not offering a contract as part of the bidding process is a strange decision for the Yankees to make. While they might not have gotten close to his $22 million two-year deal, the Yankees could've made more of an effort to re-sign him.
Instead, Weaver leaves, uncontested, to join the Mets bullpen alongside former Yankees' relievers Clay Holmes and Devin Williams.
Weaver was a quality option for the Yankees, posting a 3.62 ERA in 64 games for the Yankees out of the bullpen. Among all Yankees relievers, Weaver's 0.8 bWAR was the third most, behind only Tim Hill and David Bednar.

Weaver is now on the Mets with Williams, and the Yankees were more than okay letting him walk, evidenced by their lack of effort to try and win a bidding war for Weaver this winter.
This is a baffling decision from the Yankees, as they were more than capable of making some effort to retain Weaver. If he thrives for the Mets, then not entering the Weaver sweepstakes from the Yankees will be met with heavy scrutiny.
