Three of the greatest New York Yankees of yesteryear, and a couple of the other greatest hitters from a bygone era, have company.
Aaron Judge is about to join a club that hasn't opened its doors in generations.
Judge is about to polish off his third season with an OPS+ of 200 or better.
He'll be the sixth player in MLB history with at least three of those years through his age-33 season, according to @JayHayKid.
The other five names:
- Babe Ruth
- Lou Gehrig
- Mickey Mantle
- Ted Williams
- Rogers Hornsby
That's astounding, astonishing, amazing company.
It hardly could get better than those five hitters.
And the most recently retired of them, Mantle, hasn't played in more than 60 years.
OPS+ accounts for the era someone plays in, and having a 200 or better in it legitimately says a hitter was 100% better than a league average hitter in a given season.
So for Judge, he's so far and away above his peers in a way that hasn't been done since baseball was still the king as America's Pastime.
Judge feels larger than life, and not just because he's 6-foot-7. He's also a living legend.
