The New York Yankees have been without Luis Gil all season. Their starting rotation suffered a big blow when Clarke Schmidt was announced to likely need Tommy John surgery.
With Schmidt out, the Yankees may need to address the starting rotation at the trade deadline, but Gil's return should also help the team. Gil is slated to begin a rehab assignment on Sunday, Boone announced during his appearance on "Talkin' Yanks."
"I think he starts his rehab on Sunday," Boone said on "Talkin' Yanks." "Hopefully, he will be around three (innings) and 50 (pitches) for his first start out and slow build from there. We'll be conservative with the jumps. He's doing really well. It's gone well. I know he's really chomping at the bit to get going."
Gil was the American League Rookie of the Year last season. He had a 3.50 ERA in 29 starts. Hit pitched 151 2/3 innings and notched 171 strikeouts for the Yankees.
Gil is only 27 and could be a staple of the rotation for years to come. However, his return should not discourage Brian Cashman from making a move to add to the rotation.

The Yankees have been without Gerrit Cole all season as well. He underwent Tommy John surgery in the spring and will not return this year. The starting pitcher market might be weak near the trade deadline, but there are still some names that can help the Yankees.
