Free agent shortstop Bo Bichette has spent all seven years of his Major League Baseball career with the Toronto Blue Jays.
For now, Bichette's future with the Blue Jays is unknown. The Philadelphia Philles reportedly met with the two-time All-Star on Monday, and the New York Yankees are another club rumored to have interest in the 27-year-old.
"Bichette joining the Yankees would add another layer of intrigue, not only making New York’s roster more formidable but also adding a compelling subplot, considering the infielder has spent his entire career with the Blue Jays," MLB.com's Thomas Harrigan wrote Tuesday.
If the Yankees sign Bichette, it could create a ripple effect in the budding New York-Toronto rivalry. On their way to the World Series, the Blue Jays dominated the Yankees in four games in last year's ALDS.
Bichette's move to the Yankees may push the Blue Jays to go after Kyle Tucker
Bichette signing with the Yankees will likely frustrate the Blue Jays' front office, and especially the organization's fans. Simply put, the Yankees are the enemy.
But it may also push Toronto to be determined to strike a deal with outfielder Kyle Tucker. Almost as if to say, "anything you can do I can do better." The best-case scenario for the Yankees is for Tucker to sign outside of the AL East, preferably in the National League.
For as beloved as Bichette is in Toronto, he may receive a mixed reaction from the Rogers Centre crowd the first time he and the Yankees come to town. Surely Tucker, periodically linked to the Yankees this winter, would receive considerable boos from the Yankee Stadium crowd.
