New York Yankees RHP Devin Williams has had himself a nightmare-esque season. After being traded to the Bronx from the Milwaukee Brewers last offseason, his first — and potentially only — season in New York hasn’t gone to plan.
On the season, Williams is pitching to a 3-6 record with a 5.60 ERA, 18 saves, and four blown saves. Williams has seen himself taken out of the closer role, and even demoted out of high-leverage situations entirely. After being one of the most dominant relievers in all of baseball for most of his career prior to this season, he has experienced quite a dramatic fall-off.
Williams will enter free agency this winter
Williams will be a free agent after this season, and judging off of his performance this year, it’s unlikely the Yankees bring him back. ESPN’s Jeff Passan predicts that Williams may have no choice but to opt for a short-term prove-it deal.
“After entering this season primed to threaten Diaz's record deal, Williams has struggled with the Yankees and is looking at a one-year make-good deal,” Passan said. “Working in his favor: a 2.85 FIP that suggests better things to come.”
Williams’ struggles forced the Yankees’ hand in their trade deadline acquisitions of Jake Bird, David Bednar, and Camilo Doval to help bolster the back end of the bullpen. Barring anything unforeseen, don’t expect Williams to be closing games in the Bronx in 2026.
