Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito is without a team, and there should be multiple rosters out there who could use him, including a team in the AL East.

With the New York Yankees in a position to add another, a veteran right-hander like Giolito makes a ton of sense after what he’s shown throughout his career.

Chris Kirschner of The Athletic linked the two sides in a deal, and it makes sense given that the Red Sox don’t need him back after making a move for Sonny Gray.

“With the Yankees not in the free-agent market for a top-line starter, their options, if they so choose, will likely be one-year types. Chris Bassitt, Lucas Giolito and Zack Littell are the best second-tier options remaining. But adding any of those pitchers will cost more money than Peralta or Gore,” he wrote.

At his best, Giolito has been an All-Star and has received Cy Young votes three times. That version of Giolito would be a major addition for a Yankees rotation that could use help early on.

But the injuries and tough showings over the past few years are what make this complicated. Giolito’s recent track record has been brutal, and teams aren’t paying for his peak anymore, so that should make him cheap.

The problem is that Giolito won’t sign a one-year, $5 million deal. He’ll be looking for some cash, so that could be something the Yankees want to avoid due to the injuries.
