There's been a surprising twist to some New York Yankees rumors this offseason:

Some of them suggest that Jazz Chisholm is a trade candidate.

How can that be?

Chisholm is coming off a massive season in the Bronx and is a fan favorite. There's no way the Yanks would really trade him, is there?

Why is Jazz Chisholm in Yankees trade rumors?

The key to this is Chisholm's contract: He's entering the final year of his deal.

At the end of the 2026 season, Chisholm will be a free agent.

That doesn't mean the Yankees will  trade Chisholm. But in this case, it appears to mean that they'll at least listen to offers.

If the Yanks could add serious long-term value for a guy who they'll just have for this year, maybe they'd consider it.

"In a free-agent class that’s light on star position players, Chisholm has a chance to put himself front and center with another season like 2025," writes MLB.com's Thomas Harrigan. "Although he missed more than a month with a right oblique strain, Chisholm managed to record the first 30-30 season by a Yankees player in more than two decades, adding a 125 OPS+ and playing superb defense at second base. He’s also relatively young -- he’ll be 28 when he hits the open market next offseason."

At this point, it still seems quite likely that the Yankees will take Chisholm into the new season with them.

If New York happened to put together a nightmare first half, maybe Chisholm would be a trade deadline candidate.

But when you're a big-market team like the Yankees, you can hold your players through the end of their contract. It'd still be shocking if Chisholm was traded.
