MLB writer believes Yankees 'must' move on from Anthony Volpe image

If there are any truths to the rumors that Corey Seager could be available by the Texas Rangers, the New York Yankees have to do whatever it takes to land the star shortstop.

He's continued to prove over the past five-plus years that he's arguably the best shortstop in baseball, and while the injuries might be a big concern, Seager is very good when he’s on the field.

For the Yankees to do that, they'd likely have to cut ties with Anthony Volpe. That doesn't mean that Volpe would be part of that trade, as the Rangers likely wouldn't want him, but there wouldn't be much reason to have both players on the roster, unless they plan to move on from Ryan McMahon or Jazz Chisholm.

For others, they don't believe that, no matter the situation, Volpe should be on the roster. That includes Alvin Garcia of Heavy, who said they have to move on at this point.

“Volpe wasn’t just mediocre in 2025. He was one of the worst everyday shortstops in baseball. And for a Yankees team that hasn’t even reached the Fall Classic in 16 years, the margin for error at premium positions is gone. That’s why the Yankees are circling the shortstop market again. And this time, everything points to a decision they’ve avoided for too long.

“They must move on,” he wrote.

It's tough to disagree with Garcia, considering what has been seen from Volpe over the past few years. He's, at times, shown that he can be a decent player, but for the most part, he's been relatively below average and a bit of a disappointment.

To say that Seager would be an upgrade would be an understatement at this point.
