Luke Weaver came out of his shell last season with the New York Yankees. He went from a middle-relief guy to someone who became a back-end ace for the club and also closed out some games in the postseason.
Unfortunately, much of that magic has not been there this season. He has struggled to be consistent, which has not been ideal for the club. The bullpen has been a major hole in the Bronx this season, even after acquiring some relievers at the deadline.
Weaver will become a free agent when this season closes out. Given how he has performed this year, it could be a hard sell for the Bronx Bombers to give him another contract.
Luke Weaver's rough season puts the Yankees in a tough spot
The Yankees need to prioritize their bullpen this season. It has been the one spot that has given them the most trouble, and it is a legitimate reason why they do not hold the top spot in the AL East.
It is looking increasingly more likely that Weaver will be playing for another club in 2026. Yanks Go Yards' Henry Palattella reiterates that thought in a recent offseason outlook article.
"He's still probably going to get paid by someone in the offseason, but it just seems less and less likely that team will be the Yankees. They need an almost universal bullpen overhaul."
Weaver likely will not be the only relief pitcher who will play for a new team in 2026. Many insiders would be surprised if the Bronx Bombers also kept Devin Williams after his failed prove-it deal this season.
