MLB insider believes Yankees are still in play for Cody Bellinger despite contract impasse image

The New York Yankees have been trying to re-sign Cody Bellinger this offseason, but the negotiations haven't gone well thus far.

Scott Boras and Bellinger are holding out for a seventh year, while the Yankees seemingly don't want to go so long. As of now, it looks like the two are at an impasse.

But, despite that, MLB insider Mark Feinsand of MLB.com isn't counting out the Yankees re-signing Bellinger yet.

Yankees still have a chance to sign Cody Bellinger despite contract impasse

"Bellinger and the Yankees appear to remain far apart in their talks, with ESPN even reporting that the two sides are 'at an impasse,' causing the Yankees to operate as though Bellinger won't be back in pinstripes," Feinsand writes.

This reporting would be concerning for any free agent, but in Bellinger's case, thanks to Boras making negotiations tricky, this could spell disaster for the Yankees' odds to bring Bellinger back.

But Feinsand thinks differently. "I'm not ready to go that far, as these things are always fluid and can change daily," Feinsand writes.

Bringing Bellinger back has been the priority all winter for the Yankees. While they've been linked to players like Kyle Tucker and Bo Bichette, a reunion with Bellinger after a successful 2025 season was the most likely outcome.

The current contract talks aren't a good sign, but this take from Feinsand on the Bellinger contract situation with the Yankees is some good news for fans worrying about an extension.

Despite the two sides remaining apart in talks, Feinsand is ready to count out the Yankees just yet, as they're still his best fit this offseason.

The New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers could be fits, but coming back to the Yankees makes the most sense for everyone involved. The only question is whether a deal will get done amid these ongoing disputes.
