Insider predicts Yankees will make this major upgrade at 2025 trade deadline image

The New York Yankees are running away with the American League East, but they have bigger fish to fry.

As they look to avenge their World Series loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Yankees have had a nice first couple of months in 2025. With a 37-22 record, New York is validating general manager Brian Cashman's approach to the offseason after Juan Soto's departure.

However, Cashman still has upgrades to make at the trade deadline for the Yankees to truly separate themselves from the pack.

There are a number of avenues the Yankees could pursue, but one Major League Baseball insider is confident that Cashman will make one move in particular.

On Tuesday, Joel Sherman of the New York Post said he expects the Yankees to add at least one starting pitcher, spelling out some of their options during an episode of the "Pinstripe Post" podcast.

"The one thing I feel pretty comfortable and confident about is they'll acquire a starting pitcher," Sherman said. "And then the question is, what exactly is available in the marketplace?"

"Teams don't want to concede, and there are some teams who are very much all-in, teetering teams who don't want to do it," he added, in reference to selling off starting pitchers.

Sherman went on to name the Arizona Diamondbacks, who have Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly on the precipice of free agency, as a borderline seller whom the Yankees could seek help from if they decide to wave the white flag.

Ever since Gerrit Cole went down in spring training, the Yankees have seemed to be one starter short of their ideal roster. Sherman's intuition that they'll find that starter seems to be a widespread sentiment.
