Trent Grisham had a strong showing for the New York Yankees on Tuesday night, swatting a fifth-inning grand slam that highlighted a 2-4 performance at the plate.
The aftermath of Grisham's grand slam — an incident that involved Houston Astros starting pitcher Framber Valdez hitting César Salazar, his own catcher, with the next pitch he threw — will be the moment most remember from the Yankees' 7-1 victory, but it also exemplified the valuable contributions Grisham has provided the club in his second season in the Bronx.
Former Yankees outfielder Cameron Maybin, however, has a pessimistic outlook on Grisham's future with the team beyond 2025.
Maybin predicts that the Yankees will let Grisham leave this offseason
Shortly after Grisham launched his home run 358 feet towards the left-field bleachers in Daikin Park, Maybin took to social media to voice his concerns about the Yankees' potential treatment of Grisham during the upcoming offseason.
Maybin wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he believes the club will allow Grisham to leave in free agency.
"Trent Grisham is having a career year, but let me guess the Yankees will let him walk after the season. Just bring him back on another one year deal, why not? Not to mention he’s elite in center," Maybin wrote in the post. "Screw your defensive metrics, I watch ball."
The Yankees have yet to make a concrete decision on whether they plan to re-sign Grisham this winter, but he has given them every reason to keep him on board for the foreseeable future.
Grisham has been playing his best baseball since being dealt away by the San Diego Padres in an offseason trade that sent him to the Yankees — along with Juan Soto — in 2023. He has already achieved career highs in home runs (29) and runs scored (73) in 2025, and he is only one RBI away from tying his previous career high of 62 that he set in 2021. In addition to hitting .248 with an .839 OPS, he has generated 3.4 wins above replacement, according to Baseball Reference.
