With pitchers and catchers getting ready to report in just a few weeks, we have gotten through the bulk of the offseason. And with the World Baseball Classic in March, fans are getting treated to real competitive baseball earlier than we are used to.
While baseball is right around the corner, there are still plenty of players left on the open market. Some were more surprising than not, while some were expected to have a slow offseason.
One player who was expected to have a slow offseason was Paul Goldschmidt. With his age and Pete Alonso being the top option, it was expected that he would not sign until after Alonso made his decision.

Diamondbacks, Yankees tied to aging slugger who crushed lefties last season
Paul Goldschmidt enjoyed a season with the New York Yankees, where he played in 146 regular-season games, hitting.274/.328/.403 with 10 home runs and 45 runs batted in.
Bleacher Report's Paul Goldschmidt believes he would be an excellent addition for the Arizona Diamondbacks or the Yankees.
"After hitting.336/.411/.570 in 168 plate appearances against left-handed pitching last season, Goldschmidt still holds significant value as a platoon option. The question is how willing he will be to accept a diminished role to prolong his career. A reunion with the D-backs still looks like a logical fit, while the Yankees could also bring him back to platoon with Ben Rice."
His ability to do damage against right-handed pitching has diminished, but he still can be dangerous against lefties.
The biggest question, stated by Reuter, comes down to his willingness to accept a new role. He is not the same player he was years ago, but he could be a big benefit for a team if he can take a step back and handle playing in favorable matchups.
