Devin Williams fires back at 'mad' Yankees fans after signing with Mets image

Devin Williams does not seem to care about how Yankees fans feel about his new contract with the Mets. Either that, or he finds their reaction to the news a bit ironic.

Williams' three-year, $51 million contract with the Mets was made official on Wednesday, and he joins a short list of recent former Yankees pitchers to make the switch to Queens, joining Luis Severino and Clay Holmes.

The two-time National League Reliever of the Year took to his social media to let Yankees fans know he's confused by their messages.

“For a bunch of people that didn’t want me back on your team, [y’all] sure are mad in the [DMs],” Williams said on his Instagram story.

The Yankees acquired Williams from the Brewers last offseason, thinking they were getting one of the best closers in baseball.

Things turned sour in the Bronx

Boos rained down from the Yankee Stadium seats often during his outings, potentially giving Williams one reason to relocate to a new borough this winter.

The 31-year-old's struggles cost him the closer's role to Luke Weaver in April, and he was used in low-leverage situations for an extended period.

His 4.79 ERA was a career high by plenty, but some of Williams' underlying numbers told a different story. He ranked in the 95th percentile in expected batting average, the 99th percentile in whiff rate, and his 34.7 percent strikeout rate was well above league average.

Perhaps the next three seasons in Queens will be a better fit for Williams than the Bronx was.
