Trade idea sees Mets acquiring star left-handed reliever to bolster bullpen image

The New York Mets are one of the top teams in Major League Baseball and will look to add to their roster ahead of the trade deadline.

One area of need for the Mets is the bullpen, as New York could look to strengthen their pitching staff for a deep playoff run.

MLB analyst Brian Germinaro of RisingApple on FanSided urges the Mets to trade for Baltimore Orioles left-hander Keegan Akin.

“While Mullins would help the Mets, there is a better trade target on the Orioles,” Germinaro wrote. “That being lefty reliever Keegan Akin. He's a perfect fit for this Mets roster and can be one of the most important players down the stretch…

“Akin would fill the role as the lefty reliever, one of the most significant needs the Mets have right now. Coming into the season, the plan was to rely on AJ Minter and Danny Young as the lefties out of the pen,” Germinaro added. “However, with both of them suffering season-ending injuries, it's something they need to address. The Mets have had to use castoffs from other teams to try to fill that void. That might work in the regular season, but during the pennant chase and postseason, they need an established big league arm, a role Akin fills.”

Akin would be a late-inning reliever for the Mets and could be a situational lefty out of the bullpen. He is also under control through 2026, which would allow New York to have him for two playoff runs.

Akin is 30 years old and is 0-0 with a 3.12 ERA in 26 games this season. He’s spent his entire MLB career with Baltimore, as he made his debut in 2020 and has gone 11-18 with a 4.57 ERA in 193 games.
