The New York Mets have had an up and down season to say the least. Bound together by streaks, good and bad, New York went from fighting with the Philadelphia Phillies atop the National League East to fighting for its playoff lives in the NL wild card race.

Now, with just five games remaining in the season, the Mets hold a one-game lead over the over the Arizona Diamondbacks and Cincinnati Reds for the final NL wild card spot.

However, if the Mets can hold onto that final playoff spot in the NL, they might have a path to the World Series.

Mets Could Make History

The Mets have been a streaky team in 2025, and that's put them in a pressure-filled spot in the final week of the season.

New York lost seven straight games in June, seven straight games in August and eight straight games in September. The only other team in MLB history to have three separate losing streaks of at least seven games and still make the playoffs was the 2006 St. Louis Cardinals, according to OptaSTATS.

That Cardinals' team went on the win the World Series.

If the Mets can hang on to the final NL wild card spot, could the same be in store for New York?

October is about who gets hot at the right time. Although the Mets are in this situation because of their losing steaks, New York has four separate lengthy winning streaks as well. The Mets have two six-game and two seven-game win streaks on the season.

The Mets have a loaded lineup with Juan Soto, Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor at the top, each hitting over .260 with OPS' over .800. The rest of New York's top nine hitters all have an OPS above .700.

On the pitching side, the Mets have three young, talented prospects to match with some veteran arms. All it takes in October is everyone getting hot at the right time. Yes, that goes for every team, but that's what makes the playoffs so intense and exciting.

The Mets came back to win after being down 6-1 on Tuesday night against the Chicago Cubs to stay a game up in the wild card race. If the Mets sneak into the playoffs, history is on their side for a magical run in October.
