The New York Mets have long been interested in a centerfielder with superstar potential.
This offseason may be the ideal time to make a move for one and the latest reports from Wednesday have indicated that there may be a certain target in mind.
According to MLB reporter Michael Marino, New York is showing interest in Chicago White Sox centerfielder Luis Robert Jr. Marino noted that the two sides aren't close to a deal, but there is interest from the Mets. Marino also noted that previous conversations between the sides have circled infielder Luisangel Acuna as a return piece in exchange for Robert.
A change of scenery for Robert may be very much needed, as he's struggled mightily over the previous two seasons. Health has definitely played a factor, as the former All-Star missed 114 games in the 2024 and 2025 seasons.
When he was on the field, he was scuffling, posting respective averages of.224 and.223 with just 28 home runs and 88 RBI across the two seasons. The struggles have come after a 2023 season that saw Robert make the All-Star Game, finish 12th in MVP voting and win the first Silver Slugger Award of his career.
A return package that included Acuna would give the White Sox a young and upcoming middle infielder that has showed signs of promise early in his career. Through 214 at-bats, Acuna has posted a slash line of.248/.299/.341 with 12 extra-base hits and a.640 OPS.
It'll be intriguing to see how much progress is made on a Robert trade throughout the offseason. If the Mets can land the former All-Star, he may be able to get his career back on the track it was on after his stellar rookie season.
