The New York Mets decided to move on from Drew Gilbert during the trade deadline, a move that wasn't the worst idea.

Considering Gilbert didn't have much of a place to play on the Mets' big league roster at the moment, they decided to move on from him and land Tyler Rogers.

However, since Gilbert has been traded to the San Francisco Giants, making his debut just 20 games ago, he's been one of the better young hitters in Major League Baseball. The Giants have also played very well, creeping up on the Mets for the final Wild Card spot.

Former Mets prospect could haunt New York

When examining just how well Gilbert has played, Dan Martin of the New York Post believes that this deal could actually “haunt” the Mets moving forward, given he’s had such an impact on how San Francisco has looked over the past few weeks.

“Meanwhile, Gilbert has shown the kind of flash teams fear when they let go of a young player...

“The fiery Gilbert has helped spark a Giants team that sold at the deadline and was left for dead after falling seven games under .500 on Aug. 22 following a four-game losing streak — with the June trade for Rafael Devers looking worse by the day,” he wrote.

The Mets have made some questionable trades in the past, mainly with the Pete Crow-Armstrong deal. However, it's always tough to get a feel for what players might be at the big league level when they don't have any MLB experience yet.

It's typically better to get proven MLB talent than to hope for a prospect to be something in the future, but the Mets have to start making some better decisions.

Also, it's only been 20 games for Gilbert, so he still has plenty to prove in the show.
