Entering the MLB offseason, the New York Mets have been viewed as a major team to watch. Already, they have made a big-time move by signing free agent relief pitcher Devin Williams.
Of course, there have been questions swirling about the future of two current Mets free agents. Those two free agents are none other than star slugger Pete Alonso and pitcher Edwin Diaz.
Many predictions have seen both players choosing to leave New York. However, a new prediction has been shared for the Mets that would be a major shock compared to other predictions that have been dropped.
Mike Axisa of CBS Sports has predicted that New York will re-sign one of those two players.

"Those two being Pete Alonso and Edwin Díaz. It is in no way a lock the Mets re-sign either player. The club needs a major vibe shift after their disappointing 2025 season, and that process is already underway with the Brandon Nimmo-Marcus Semien trade," Axisa wrote. "I do think the Mets will ultimately bring one of the two back though, with a Díaz reunion seeming far more likely than Alonso, even after the Mets signed Devin Williams to strengthen the bullpen. New York had a pretty bad relief crew in 2025. They would be best off adding Williams to Díaz, not replacing Díaz with Williams. POBO David Stearns may not want to spend big on two one-inning relievers, but what good is owner Steve Cohen's wealth if you're not going to use it to lock down elite players?"
Alonso seems to be the most likely to leave two. He is coming off of a 2025 MLB season that saw him play in 162 games. He hit 38 home runs to go along with 126 RBI, while slashing.272/.347/.524.
Diaz, on the other hand, would be wise for the Mets to bring back if the price is right. During the 2025 campaign, he appeared in 62 games. In those games, he went 6-3 with a 1.63 ERA, a 0.87 WHIP, a 4.7 K/BB ratio, 28 saves, and just three blown saves.

Axisa did make it clear that New York is not a lock to bring back either player. The Mets will have to get aggressive in order to bring one of them back.
Expect to continue hearing rumors surrounding the New York franchise. The front office badly wants to power the Mets back into World Series contention. Keeping Alonso or Diaz could be extremely important to reaching that goal.
