New York Mets’ right-hander Tylor Megill made his third Triple-A rehab start on Tuesday, allowing three earned runs over four innings (79 pitches) with five strikeouts.
According to CBS Sports, he “looks ready to return” from the 60-day injured list, where he was transferred on July 8 with a right elbow sprain after initially being placed on the 15-day IL on June 17.
The Mets haven’t confirmed if Megill will join the starting rotation upon his return, although it seems like a possibility due to the recent struggles of Kodai Senga and Sean Manaea.
Megill’s latest rehab start
Tuesday marked the third straight game that Megill pitched at least four innings for Triple-A Syracuse. He began his rehab assignment with two brief outings at Double-A Binghamton.
Prior to his injury, Megill held a career-best 3.95 ERA over 14 starts this season. He hasn’t pitched since June 14, but CBS reports he could be reinstated as early as this Sunday in Cincinnati.
Sunday would normally be Senga’s turn in the rotation, but the Mets are considering assigning him to the minors due to a recent rough stretch, per Will Sammon of The Athletic.
However, the Mets could also wait to activate Megill next week to give him a few extra days of rest after Tuesday’s outing. If he can pick up where he left off in June, Megill would be a welcome addition to a struggling New York rotation just in time for the stretch run.
The Mets’ supposed two aces aren’t looking the part. Senga holds a 6.56 ERA over his last eight starts, and Manaea has posted a 5.60 ERA in 10 games (nine starts) this season.
