Mets-Twins trade idea brings $100M All-Star to NY to complete superteam image

The New York Mets have no shortage of star players. However, they may need one more star in their lineup to solidify themselves as the team to beat in the National League.

Juan Soto, Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso are among the best players in baseball. This season, Brandon Nimmo is contributing in a big way as well. His 18 home runs and .790 OPS have led owner Steve Cohen to coin his quartet of star players the "Fab Four." However, in an NL that features the Los Angeles Dodgers, four stars may not be enough.

There could be some star players available at the trade deadline, and FanSided's Josh Mayer suggested the Mets turn their "Fab Four" into the "Fab Five" by trading for Byron Buxton of the Minnesota Twins.

"The Mets' starting centerfielder is currently Tyrone Taylor, who flashes one of the best gloves in the game but is, for the most part, a liability at the plate," wrote Mayer. "Bringing in Buxton, an above-average fielder who also happens to be one of the best hitters in the sport, would fill the offensive hole without having to miss a strong defensive presence in center (and if you're thinking about Taylor's elite baserunning, no worries -- Buxton is even better in that regard)."

Buxton's biggest issue has been staying healthy. However, this season he has played in 75 of the team's 92 games and is slashing .270/.338/.544 with 20 home runs. The Twins signed him to a seven-year, $100 million deal in 2022, and could look to cash in while he's healthy and his trade value is high.

Buxton was an All-Star in 2022 and has been with the Twins since 2015. He could be an elite addition to the Mets' outfield. His arrival would allow Jeff McNeil to stick at second base full-time as well. A group of Soto, Lindor, Alonso, Nimmo and Buxton would be worthy of the iconic "Fab Five" title.
