The New York Mets certainly seemed to have enough bodies to handle third base this season, but no one has stepped up.
Mark Vientos took a huge step back from his breakout season in 2024, then landed on the injured list. Brett Baty has once again proven to be unreliable at the plate. Luisangel Acuña and Ronny Mauricio are intriguing talents, but unestablished and further down the depth chart.
For New York to re-establish itself as a contender after a brutal month of June, one baseball writer thinks they could bring a veteran third baseman into the fold to establish some continuity.
On Monday, CBS Sports' R.J. Anderson listed the Mets among the possible trade deadline destinations for Colorado Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon, a 2024 All-Star who excels with the glove, and is up and down as a hitter.
McMahon is under contract through 2027, and the Mets, if they acquired him, would owe him over $36 million of the $60 million Colorado initially guaranteed.
"There's no telling what awaits when it comes to the Rockies and the deadline, but McMahon is an interesting and (to an extent) self-contradicting player," Anderson wrote.

"McMahon is on the wrong side of 30 and has just two more seasons remaining on his contract, suggesting the Rockies would be wise to act now, lest they miss out on their window to get a quality return. Potential landing spots: Red Sox, Yankees, Mets."
McMahon has a 92 OPS+ this season, which exactly matches his career average. But he's made a conscious effort to pull the ball in the air more often, which could actually pay dividends in a home ballpark that isn't Coors Field.
Do the Mets value his consistency enough to take a chance on giving up prospect capital and paying off the rest of his contract?
