Since being traded to the New York Mets, Ryan Helsley has largely struggled. He has had a problem keeping the baseball in the ballpark and has looked like a shell of himself over his past few outings.
His rough stretch would continue on Wednesday when he was called into the game against the Detroit Tigers in the seventh inning. Helsley would give up a three-run home run off the bat of Kerry Carpenter, which led to the Mets' loss.
After the game, Helsley did not dance around the questions about his performance. He was open about what is going on and what he is trying to do in order to fix his problem and return to the pitcher that he knows he can be, via SNY's Colin Martin.
"Just trying anything and everything," Helsley said. "Feels like [I] make a good pitch and it gets hit, and then mistakes obviously get hit as well. Seems like everything's failing. Obviously can't walk guys and got to compete out there. Just keep trying to get after it when I'm out there."
Helsley nearly feels lost out there on the mound. He feels like he cannot get anything past hitters, as even his good pitchers have seen a good amount of barrels lately.
Ryan Helsley looking to 'get back to the basics'
Ryan Helsley went into further detail about his headspace and his plan to get back to where he wants to be. He believes that he needs to get back to the fundamentals if he wants a chance to help his club win in those high-leverage moments.
"Just trying to get back to the basics and start at square one. Try to get back to form and be myself and help the team win."
