With the historic collapse the New York Mets have had in the second half of the season, nothing should be off the table this winter. It remains uncertain what the Mets plan to do, but considering the money they gave to Juan Soto during last offseason, there's no debate that they have to go back out there and try to add players to the roster.

That could come in a trade or through the signing of players, with the Mets expected to do a bit of both.

But to land very good players, the Mets will likely have to move on from some of their top prospects. The Mets' pitching prospects have been excellent for them in the second half, part of the reason why they even have a chance to make the postseason.

Will the Mets trade a top prospect?

Outside of that, guys like Jett Williams are expected to be significant parts of the future in New York.

However, Eric Cole threw some cold water on that, naming him one of six players who could be traded during the offseason.

“Whether the Mets make the playoffs or not, it is clear that New York has to regroup a bit and make some changes to their roster that spending crazy amount of money can't somehow solve. Williams is a really intriguing prospect that can really run and has shown a surprising amount of power.

“However, his lack of size is somewhat problematic for his long-term projection and with some other young players in the talent pipeline, trading Williams could allow their front office to swing a big move that the free agent market doesn't yet possess viable alternatives to,” he wrote.

Williams is an intriguing prospect who had plenty of success during the 2025 campaign. He hit .363 in 572 at-bats, including 17 home runs.

Moving him in a trade might not be the best idea, but considering where the Mets stand as an organization, it might be better to go out and get a proven veteran.

That's ultimately what David Stearns will have to consider this winter.
