The New York Mets were widely expected to let Pete Alonso walk during the 2025 season, as he never gave any indication that he was committed to returning. Whenever asked about his future, he typically referenced having a good career with the Mets, but made it clear that anything could happen.
“But again, we'll see what happens. I love it, it's great, but you can't really predict anything. And for me... I am focused on trying to put this thing across the finish line. I haven't really thought about the free agent thing until we're talking about it right now,” Alonso said. “It would be great to stay. But, again, whatever happens, happens. I can't get a crystal ball. I wish I could, but we'll see.”
On Wednesday, Alonso officially signed with the Baltimore Orioles on a five-year deal.
“First baseman Pete Alonso and the Baltimore Orioles are finalizing a five-year, $155 million contract, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan. Alonso, after failing to get the long-term deal that he coveted, made $30 million with the New York Mets in 2025 and was worth every penny as he rebounded to slash.272/.347/.524 with 38 home runs and 126 RBIs, batting behind Juan Soto for the first time. However, the Mets did not make Alonso an offer, sources confirmed to ESPN,” ESPN wrote.
Now, the Mets are surveying several options to replace Alonso, and one intriguing name is Cardinals slugger Willson Contreras.
“Desperate for a new first baseman and power hitter, Willson Contreras is a worthwhile target. After allegedly being unwilling to waive his no-trade clause when the offseason began, he’s since softened on that stance and it’s been reported he’d specifically do so for the Mets. Perhaps he could even spell Francisco Alvarez behind the plate to regain that all-powerful catcher eligibility,” NBC Sports’ James Schiano wrote.
If the Mets can pull off a trade for Contreras, they would be adding a strong bat who could help protect Juan Soto in the middle of the lineup. Contreras recently transitioned to first base and has handled the position better than expected.
The Mets are in a difficult spot, and a move needs to be made quickly or frustration among fans will only continue to grow. Contreras would be a solid and impactful replacement for Alonso.
