The New York Mets are shaping up to be a fun team to watch this offseason, with several high-profile moves expected. However, it’s still unclear which direction the team will take. One key name to watch is Cody Bellinger, who reportedly knew he was opting out of his contract following the conclusion of the season.
“As expected, New York Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger plans to opt out of his contract and become a free agent next month, a source told ESPN. Bellinger, 30, has a $25 million player option for next season. After a rebound season in his first year in pinstripes, he presumably will receive widespread interest in free agency—it should yield a lucrative multi-year contract,” ESPN’s Jorge Castillo wrote.
Another big name is Kyle Tucker, but Bellinger had a stronger year than him last season.
“But the one thing that Bellinger provides that Tucker doesn’t—two things actually—center field and first base. I’ll throw in a third thing: no qualifying offer. Tucker will have a qualifying offer that could affect him a little bit. Not that much because he’s a big star. He is the No. 1 free agent but in many respects Bellinger had a better year,” MLB’s Jon Heyman said.
Bleacher Report’s Erik Beaston believes the Mets will go all in for Bellinger.
“Spotrac lists Bellinger's annual market value at $30.4 million, a price the Mets will be happy to pay at a position of need, especially if they can convince him to leave their Big Apple rivals to do it,” Beaston wrote. “The move would allow the Amazins to maintain outfield consistency while using McNeil, or someone else, at second base without constantly tinkering with the lineup. Considering the offensive struggles that plagued the team down the stretch, that would be hugely beneficial for a team with lofty expectations and payroll.”
Adding Bellinger would strengthen the Mets’ lineup and greatly improve their outfield defense. His presence could push them into true World Series contention. While the Mets are expected to fight for a playoff spot each year, Bellinger gives them a clear path to the championship. Seeing him in a different part of New York would certainly be fascinating.
