The New York Mets ended their season in the worst way possible — missing the playoffs by a single game after a crushing loss to the Miami Marlins. At one point, the Mets held the best record in baseball. But by September, the team had completely fallen apart.

“The New York Mets, losers of six straight, are down 6-0 and facing Jacob deGrom. Since starting 45-24 and owning the best record in MLB, the Mets are 31-47, better than only the Rockies, Twins and Nationals. This isn't a collapse. It's a disintegration,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan posted.

To make matters worse, the Mets are expected to lose star slugger Pete Alonso to free agency this winter. That would free up salary, giving the team the chance to make a splash elsewhere — including potentially targeting rival slugger Kyle Schwarber.

“However, if Alonso decides to walk after a frustrating offseason last year where he was unable to find the long-term pact he was seeking, the logical fallback plan might be to use Vientos at first base and to sign Schwarber to be the DH and replacement for Alonso's power. The fact that the Mets would be stealing him from the division rival Phillies would only serve as further motivation,” Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter wrote.

Schwarber is coming off an unforgettable season, even challenging Shohei Ohtani for the MVP award. His next contract is projected to be in the $100–110 million range.

“More recently, J.D. Martinez signed a five-year, $110 million contract with the Red Sox in the spring of 2018 as he entered his age-30 season. Martinez was an All-Star in every full season of the deal, the lone exception coming in 2020, when there was no All-Star Game,” MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand wrote.

Schwarber will be one of the most sought-after names this offseason, and the Mets could strike gold if they land him. After a bitterly disappointing finish to this season, New York is looking to bounce back — and fast.

Adding Schwarber would give the Mets one of the most powerful bats in baseball. It would be a bold, surprising move — and a major power play within the division.
