The New York Mets have a lot of questions to answer this offseason, and the first revolves around Pete Alonso. Alonso spent all of last offseason trying to find the right deal before deciding to return to Queens. However, this year, he hasn’t committed to coming back in the slightest.

“Playing for this organization, this city—they've continued to believe in me. I love playing here. There's some great guys in this clubhouse, some great people on the staff. Every single day, it's been a pleasure coming to work and putting on the orange and blue. I've really appreciated it and have been nothing but full of gratitude every single day. Nothing is guaranteed, but we'll see what happens—I’ve loved being a Met. Hopefully, they've appreciated me the same,” Alonso told the media.

The Mets are still very much in play for Alonso, even if he hasn’t made it seem that way.

“Like Bregman, it took Alonso until mid-February to land a deal, re-signing with the Mets for two years and $54 million. Alonso has said he plans to opt out of the final year and $24 million of the deal to give free agency another try, and with 38 home runs, 126 RBIs, and an.871 OPS in 162 games this season—not to mention the absence of a qualifying offer—he should draw more interest than he did a year ago. Potential fit: Mets,” MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand wrote.

The Mets won’t want to let Alonso walk away easily. However, it’s going to take a payday if they want to retain him.

“Predicted Contract: 7 years, $210 million,” Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter wrote.

Alonso is beloved by the fans, but sometimes money talks. His re-signing last winter was temporary. The only way to get Alonso back is to offer him a hefty paycheck before it’s too late.
