The New York Mets are officially out of the playoffs after being shut out by the Miami Marlins on Sunday. The Cincinnati Reds lost to the Brewers, which opened a path to the playoffs, but they were unable to take advantage of the opportunity. To miss the playoffs, it took a historic collapse.

“The Mets lost 7 straight in June. They lost 7 straight again in August. They lost 8 straight in September. The only team in MLB history to have 3 separate 7+ game losing streaks & yet still make the playoffs was the 2006 Cardinals, who went on to win the World Series that year,” Opta Stats posted.

With the season over, it is now decision time. First baseman Pete Alonso has made it very clear that he will be entering free agency.

“After the Mets crashed out of playoff contention with a 4-0 loss to the Marlins on Sunday in their final game of the season, first baseman Pete Alonso said he will opt out of the final year and $24 million on his contract,” MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo wrote.

Alonso’s comments after the game still make it very unclear where his head is at.

“Playing for this organization, this city - they've continued to believe in me. I love playing here. There's some great guys in this clubhouse, some great people on the staff. Every single day, it's been a pleasure coming to work and putting on the orange and blue. I've really appreciated it and have been nothing but full of gratitude every single day. Nothing is guaranteed, but we'll see what happens - I've loved being a Met. Hopefully, they've appreciated me the same,” Alonso told the media.

A player who wants to come back would make their desire clear. Alonso, throughout the year, hasn’t given more than a “we’ll see what happens.”

The Mets definitely want him back, as he is the franchise home run leader. However, the longer this goes, the more it seems Alonso may not want to stick around. This will be an interesting situation to monitor during the offseason.
