The New York Mets are in a tight race atop the National League East with the Philadelphia Phillies. Pete Alonso is a big reason for the Mets' success, and he was just named an All-Star for the fifth time in his career.

Pete Alonso has participated in the Home Run Derby five times in his career. He was crowned the champion in 2019 and 2021. Only Aaron Judge has hit more home runs since 2019, when Alonso debuted. This year, however, Alonso will not be participating in the Home Run Derby.

"I want to fully be able to enjoy the festivities," Alonso told MLB.com's Anthony DiComo. "That’s really what it boils down to.

"As fun as it is, for me, it’s not necessarily the work or the swings. It’s more the adrenaline spikes up and down. So having that Monday off … I’m really excited to have those days off."

Alonso was named an All-Star alongside Edwin Díaz and Francisco Lindor. Lindor made the team through fan voting, while Alonso and Díaz were announced on Sunday. The Mets are 1 1/2 games behind the Phillies in the NL East, but they have plenty of time to take the lead back.

Alonso does not want to jeopardize winning the division in order to claim another Home Run Derby title. The added rest would be great for Alonso. He played in every game last season and has played in every game this season as well. He is slashing .287/.380/.543 with 20 home runs. His slug is still there, but his batting average has been a surprise. He carried a .240 average last season.
