The New York Mets are in the middle of a solid season and are vying for the NL East title from the Philadelphia Phillies. Thanks to the efforts of a trio of rookie pitchers, the Mets' chances look a lot better than they did earlier in the year.
But another huge piece of the Mets' success this season has been Pete Alonso, the team's power-hitting first baseman who signed a one-year, $30 million deal in the offseason with a player option for 2026. With Alonso set to decline the option, he'll become a free agent.
As a free agent, Alonso got a big contract update from Spotrac.com, which has the Mets superstar slated to make around $30 million per year, but over the course of six seasons instead of just one.
Pete Alonso Projects to Get $177 Million Contract
Alonso is projected by Spotrac to earn a massive pay increase to $177 million this winter, which would net him $29.5 million per year. While a slight decrease from his current APY, Alonso would be getting a lot more long-term security with this deal.
He's going to be 31 years old at the start of any new deal he signs, and as a first baseman, there might not be as much demand as there would be if he were an outfielder. But a $177 million deal is still a lot, and would be more than worth it for Alonso.
The Mets' first baseman is a five-time All-Star, NL Rookie of the Year, and two-time Home Run Derby Champion. He has 259 home runs in his Mets career, the franchise record after surpassing Darryl Strawberry earlier this season.
He's also third in franchise RBIs with 699, and fourth in OPS+ with 135 in his 990 games played for the Mets since 2019. He has 930 hits, 569 runs, 179 doubles, and is among the league's best power hitters.

A contract of $177 million won't be cheap, but Alonso more than deserves such a contract after the production he's had since coming up with the Mets in 2019.
While New York might find it difficult to retain Alonso, their top three pitching prospects showing so much promise could allow the team to allocate some of their money to Alonso as opposed to their pitching staff.
Regardless of where Alonso ends up this winter, the projected deal for the slugging first baseman is $177 million over six seasons, which projects as the sixth-largest deal this winter according to Spotrac.
