Luck isn’t on the New York Mets’ side when it comes to catchers this season.
Backup catcher Luis Torrens was placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Sept. 7, with a right forearm contusion, the team announced Monday afternoon. In a corresponding move, catcher Hayden Senger was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse.
The roster move comes just days after catcher Francisco Alvarez returned from the 10-day IL and reclaimed his spot in the starting lineup. New York begins a series tonight against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park in a key divisional matchup with the regular season coming to a close.

Mets make roster move Monday
Torrens has been the Mets’ main catcher this season as Alvarez has struggled with both injuries and his game, which led to a midseason demotion to the minors. But Alvarez has appeared in all three games since his return from the IL on Sept. 5, making two starts.
Torrens has appeared in 82 games (68 starts) at catcher this season, batting .225 with five home runs and 29 RBI.
Meanwhile, Senger returns to the majors after only three days in the minors. He added catching depth to the Mets’ Major League roster during Alvarez’s absence from Aug. 19 to Sept. 5.
But Senger is having a poor offensive season, slashing .174/.216/.188 over 30 games. That means all eyes will be on Alvarez this week, who likely won’t be playing at 100 percent.
MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo wrote about Alvarez’s injury concerns following his return last Friday:
“Mets officials are admittedly unsure what Alvarez will be able to provide given that he’s playing through multiple hand injuries, one of which—the torn thumb ligament—will need surgery after the season. But given Alvarez’s importance to the team, they’re willing to try.”
Before Alvarez suffered a right thumb UCL sprain on Aug. 19, he was slashing .323/.408/.645 with four home runs in his last 21 games before the injury. The Mets will hope that Alvarez shows up down the stretch, especially with Torrens now working his way back from injury.
