The New York Mets have a chance to deal a big blow to a division rival.

The latest rumor suggests the Mets could swipe free agent slugger Kyle Schwarber from right under the nose of the Philadelphia Phillies.

This is what ESPN's Buster Olney wrote on Friday:

"The juiciest rumor I heard this week was the notion that the Mets could push the Phillies for Schwarber, and there are a lot of reasons this could make sense. Beyond Schwarber's power and on-base capability -- can you imagine pitchers working to get through Schwarber and Soto in the same inning? -- he is known as someone who works to pull players together. And hell, even if the Mets don't believe they can beat the Phillies in the bidding for the slugger, they could push Philadelphia's cost by being involved, as the Braves did with Aaron Nola two winters ago."

That would be pretty incredible if the Mets could pull it off.

And like Olney writes, even if they don't, maybe they force the Phillies to shell out more money to avoid a scenario where the Mets get Schwarber.

Particularly if Pete Alonso goes elsewhere in free agency, a guy like Schwarber would more than make up for that departure.

Schwarber hit 187 home runs in his four seasons with the Phillies. That includes 56 of them in 2025.

He's a DH-only at this point, but his eye and his power are enough to make that more than worth it.

The Mets got Juan Soto from the Yankees last offseason. Could they get Schwarber from the Phillies this offseason? Let's see what Steven Cohen's wallet has in mind.
