Both the New York Mets and Yankees were active at the trade deadline back in July. For the Yankees, it worked out for the most part as they are fighting for a division crown.
However, the Mets' trade additions have been mainly busts and have led to New York's National League club struggling to stay in the postseason picture. There were reports earlier this week that both New York teams were in conversation about a one-for-one player trade before the deadline.
The player the Yankees were going to give away? 34 home run slugger, Trent Grisham.
Mets, Yankees were almost in agreement on monumental trade
Not saying that a deal like this would have rocked the baseball world, but Trent Grisham has 34 home runs, and the players the Yankees were inquiring about was Brett Baty.
Brett Baty has been a solid bat for the Mets this season. He's hitting .254 with 18 home runs and 50 RBIs. At the time, Aaron Judge's health was a concern, and perhaps that may have led the Yankees' front office to hold onto Trent Grisham.
Obviously, the deal didn't happen, but it's fun to speculate after the fact when reports like this are released. Would the Mets have been better off with Grisham, and could he be helping them secure a playoff spot at the moment? Could Brett Baty solve the Yankees' left side of the infield problem?
The prospectus of this trade makes sense, but nobody could foresee Trent Grisham amassing his previous career-high home runs of 17 and then doubling that number this season.
