When the New York Mets traded for Cedric Mullins, the hope was for him to figure things out on the offensive side of the baseball.

Throughout much of Mullins’ career, he's been an average offensive player, but he had some excellent moments for the Baltimore Orioles, too. Mullins was one of the better hitters in baseball to start the year, before struggling a bit before being traded to the Mets.

Fast forward to his time with the Mets, and things have been as ugly as they can be, playing like one of the worst players in Major League Baseball for much of the past few months.

Mets will look to replace Cedric Mullins

Some wonder what the Mets will do at the position long term, with others believing that the Mets could call up a prospect in the near future. While that likely isn't to happen during the remainder of this campaign, that could come next year.

When examining which player might get a chance, SNY named Carson Benge as a potential option.

However, Joe DeMayo later added that he expects the team to have a veteran on the roster, even if a prospect is up.

“I envision the Mets being sure they are covered from a veteran standpoint, ideally on a short-term deal to not block young players like Benge, Williams, or Ewing, who could potentially hold down center field before long.

“Benge reached Triple-A in his first professional season after he beat up High-A and Double-A pitching to the tune of a .308/.413/.513 slash line with 24 doubles, six triples and 12 home runs in 92 games,” he wrote.

Benge has enjoyed some success for the Mets throughout much of the Minor League season, but asking a young prospect to come up to a team that's expected to win a World Series every season is questionable.

If the plan is to play him next year at some point, Mullins will certainly walk in free agency.
