The New York Mets had a banner offseason, but they might also need a banner trade deadline.
A strong start for the Mets gave way to an ugly June, from which they're still trying to recover. A comeback win on Monday night helps, but the Mets are 13 games over .500, down from their season peak of 21, and trail the Philadelphia Phillies by half a game.
There are a million theories about what the Mets might do at the trade deadline, and most of them center either on pitching, or improving the center field position.
One Mets writer, SNY's Danny Abriano, thinks the Mets should explore a different possibility--improving at the hot corner.
On Monday, Abriano strongly urged the Mets to look into trading for Arizona Diamondbacks star third baseman Eugenio Suárez, though it's well-known that the New York Yankees and several other teams have even greater needs at the position.
"With Eugenio Suarez possibly out there for the taking, the Mets have to at least explore what it would take to acquire a guy who's been one of the best power hitters in baseball this season," wrote Abriano.

"Adding Suarez would transform and lengthen the lineup, giving New York another imposing bat to add to the "Fab Four" of Brandon Nimmo, Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto, and Pete Alonso. But the competition for him could be fierce, with the Yankees among the teams with a much bigger need at the hot corner than the Mets."
Very quietly, Brett Baty has started to look like a legitimate option for the Mets, which is doubly important because Mark Vientos has made himself into a fringy designated hitter option rather than a viable third baseman.
Suárez is undoubtedly in another stratosphere, with a National League-best 36 home runs (five in his last three games). But the cost will be high enough for two months of his bat that teams can't afford to half-step into the picture.
