Mets add World Series champion pitcher with 1.96 ERA in key decision image

The New York Mets shuffled around their pitching staff heading into the weekend.

They sent down Brandon Waddell, which made space on the roster for Chris Devenski.

Devenski, the right-handed reliever who won a World Series title with the Astros, has been dominant this season at Triple-A Syracuse and earned the promotion.

In Syracuse, Devenski had a 1.96 ERA and 0.764 WHIP with 13 strikeouts in 18.1 innings.

Devenski, 34, signed a minor-league deal with the Mets this offseason after most recently pitching for the Rays.

He made one appearance in the majors earlier this season, allowing a pair of runs and striking out two in 2.0 innings of work.

Waddell threw 4.1 innings on Wednesday, likely prompting his demotion to free up some fresh pitches in the Mets' bullpen.

Devenski may not be a flashy move, but he's the kind of guy who could get hot and stay with the big club the rest of the year.

He's known for a nasty changeup, a pitch that can be effective no matter how hard a pitcher throws.

We'll see if Devenski gets a longer leash to show that pitch off this time around with the Mets.
