The New York Mets were in desperate need of a left-handed reliever, and they acquired a two-time All-Star lefty from the Baltimore Orioles.
SNY’s Andy Martino first reported that the Mets acquired Gregory Soto from the Orioles. Baltimore received prospects Wellington Aracena and Cameron Foster in the deal.
“Soto is perfect for what the Mets need. A second lefty with big swing & miss stuff,” wrote SNY’s Joe DeMayo on X. “Aracena was a prospect I highlighted in June with good stuff. A good flier for BAL.”
Soto, 30, has had a solid year for the Orioles and is now entering a division race with New York. Soto is 0-2 with a 3.96 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP in 45 appearances this season.
Aracena, 20, has been very good in Single-A St. Lucie this season. Aracena is 1-1 with a 2.38 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP in 17 appearances (eight starts).
Aracena’s stuff plays, recording 84 strikeouts and an opponent batting average of just .166 in 64.1 innings.

Foster, 26, is 5-2 with a 2.97 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP in 21 appearances with Double-A Birmingham and Triple-A Syracuse.
Foster has been excellent in Birmingham, posting a 1.01 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP in 26.2 innings. He has a 17.18 ERA and a 2.73 WHIP in 3.2 innings with Syracuse.
Soto will provide experience and depth to New York’s bullpen as they try to maintain their half-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies for first place in the National League East.
