Dodgers advance to the NLCS in historic fashion after blunder by Phillies image

The Los Angeles Dodgers advanced to the NLCS on Thursday night with their 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.

How did they do it? Via an error by Phillies' pitcher Orion Kerkering in the bottom of the 11th inning.

In the bottom of the 11th inning, the Dodgers' nine-hole hitter Andy Pages hit a dribbler back to the mound, and Kerkering threw the ball to the backstop, allowing Hyeseong Kim to score the winning run.

It was just the second time ever that an MLB team had advanced via an error in playoffs.

According to OptaSTATS, the Dodgers are the second team ever in postseason history to clinch a series on a walkoff error.

The first time came nine years ago when Rougned Odor made an errant throw that allowed the Blue Jays to sweep the Rangers in the ALDS.

The game four battle between the Phillies and Dodgers was as tense as it gets. Both teams deployed their best pitchers throughout the game, and Dodgers' rookie Roki Sasaki gave the team three perfect innings out of the bullpen.

Philadelphia brought in Jesus Luzardo in the late innings, but eventually opted to bring Kerkering in for the 11th. The Dodgers were able to get the bases loaded with two outs, and then disaster struck for the Phillies. A truly tragic way to lose a series and end what was a great season.
