Somewhere along the way, the uniform gods decided that the numbers on the back of a jersey top could be either one digit or two digits.
Why not three? That's what Kansas City Royals star Vinnie Pasquantino wants to know.
Pasquantino recently joined in on some social media banter about Alex Bregman wearing the No. 2 on his jersey because he was the second pick of his draft.
The lefty slugger joked (or maybe was serious) that he wants to be number 319.
This is why I wanted to wear #319 but 3 digit numbers aren’t allowed https://t.co/iWCyQTbbw9

Pasquantino was that 319th selection in the 2019 MLB Draft out of Old Dominion. That works out to be an 11th-round pick.
He's the only player from that round to have accumulated at least 1.0 Win Above Replacement in the major leagues.
Pasquantino has a really funny social media presence, which has to be fun for his fans.
And hey, maybe one of those Royals fans should start a petition. Or at least start selling some self-created Kansas City jerseys with the number 319 on the back. Pasquantino has earned that.
