The Houston Astros are battling for a playoff spot and are expected to be aggressive ahead of the 2025 Major League Baseball trade deadline.
The Astros have a clear need at first base and a left-handed hitter. With that, MLB analyst Lior Lampert of FanSided urges the Astros to trade for Ryan O’Hearn of the Baltimore Orioles.
“Astros general manager Dana Brown is reportedly scouring the market to resolve the problem ahead of the July 31 trade deadline,” Lampert wrote. “Fortunately for him and Houston, one target stands out as an adequate Alvarez fill-in: Ryan O'Hearn of the Baltimore Orioles.
“O'Hearn checks multiple boxes for a perennially contending Astros squad that's ostensibly gearing up for what they hope will be a deep postseason run. And given Baltimore's disappointing efforts in 2025, they figure to be sellers in the coming weeks, barring a miraculous turnaround,” Lampert added.

O’Hearn is a pending free agent as he’s earning $8 million in 2025. The first baseman would fill a major need of a left-handed bat for Houston, as currently, the Astros only have switch-hitting catcher Victor Caratini as the regular left-handed batter.
O’Hearn would likely be a platoon option at first base and would add some pop to Houston’s lineup. This season with Baltimore, he’s hitting .305 with 10 home runs and 29 RBIs. In his career, he has 77 home runs and 279 RBIs over parts of eight MLB seasons.
The Astros are currently atop the AL West with a record of 45-33.
